The following, is a chronological outline for Revive Us Again.  This chronological list shows the sequence of events, important to the founding and development of America.  The hymns are listed in the order they became available to American congregations.  Also, included are the dates when the lyrics or music were done if other than when listed.  For example, the first listed hymn, "Jesus, The Very Thought Of Thee," had the words written in 1150 AD. However, it is listed in 1866 when the tune, we know, was composed and not on the year 1849 when the text was translated into English.  [Legend] = m/music, t/translated, w/ words, a/adapted, ar/arranged, t/n tune-name, sp/special.  The 366 hymns are listed in order in the outline, numbered 1-366 in bold type.  Each of those hymn titles are also in bold Print.

1150-w/ "Jesus, The Very Thought Of Thee" by Bernard of Clairvaux (1091-1153), t/1849, m/1866.

1225-w/ "All Creatures Of Our God and King" by Francis of Assisi (1182-1226), m/1623, t/1926.

1236-Bible, divided into chapters by Cardinal Caro.

1382-John Wycliffe (1328-1384) translated the first handwritten English Bible from the Latin Vulgate.

1455-Johann Gutenberg (1397-1468), is the inventor of the printing press.  The first book, printed was the 42-line Mazarin Bible at Mainz with his financier, Johannes Fust.

1492-Christopher Columbus (1445-1506) sailed from Palos, Spain on August 3rd and arrived at Bahama Island on October 12th, a voyage of 70 days.

1503-Martin Luther (1483-1546) found Ephesians 2:8-9, salvation by grace through faith and is generally credited with the Reformation bringing the world out of the Dark Ages.

1517-Luther posted his 95 theses on Wittenberg Castle door, on October 31st.

1525-William Tyndale (1494-1536) completed his English translation of the Holy Bible.  Martin Luther used the same Hebrew and Greek texts to translate the Bible into German.

1535-w/m "Good Christian Men Rejoice" from Klug's Gesangbush, t/1853.

1535-William Tyndale (1494-1536) was captured in Antwerp, Belgium and found guilty of heresy for translating the Bible into English by Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor.

1536-William Tyndale (1494-1536) was burned to death on October 6, his translation work was the basis of the King James Version of the Bible.

1536-John Calvin (1509-1564) wrote.  The Institutes which were fundamental in Colonial America Protestant theology.

1539-The first English hymnal was by Myles Coverdale.  Of the 41 hymns, 36 were translations from German sources.  One was the first English version of "Ein feste Burg".

1547-Sternhold and Hopkins Psalter became the accepted psalm book for English worship for the rest of the 16th and then the 17th centuries.

1551-m/ "The Doxology", hymn-tune Old Hundredth by Louis Bourgeois (1510-1561) is the most popular and most widely used psalm tune, w/1674.

1551-Bible, divided into verses by Robert Stevens.

1561-w/ "O Worship The King" by William Kethe, m/1815.

1562-The Geneva Psalter was ultimately translated into more than 20 languages.

1563-John Foxe (1516-1587) had Book Of Martyrs published, it was completed in 1559.

1582-The Gregorian Calendar, adopted by Catholic countries.

1601-m/ "O Sacred Head, Now Wounded" by Hans Leo Hassler (1564-1612), ar/1729, t/1830.

1604-King James I (1566-1625) commissioned Authentic translation of English Bible.

1607-Jamestown settlers arrived in America on May 14th.

1611-The King James Bible Authorized Version, completed in England.

1612-Ainsworth Psalter was published and was brought to America by the Pilgrims in 1620.

1620-Pilgrims left Plymouth, England on September 6 with 102 passengers and crew on Mayflower.  Cape Cod sighted on November 9 and all landed at Plymouth Rock on December 16.

1620-When the Pilgrims arrived, God had the right man in the right place at the right time.  Squanto, a native American, is a little-known story that teaches many lessons.  He had been captured and taken to England where he was prepared by God and returned to America just in time," to be a special instrument sent of God for their good, beyond their expectation," was the way William Bradford said it on page 80 in his History of the Plymouth Settlement 1608-1650, reprinted by Mantle Ministries in 1988.

The royalties from all his songs were stolen from him, and he died penniless, near starvation!

Later, he and his wife became workers in the Salvation Army and after several years, resigned and became an evangelist, during which time he wrote this hymn.  A 12-foot wooden cross at Reed City, Michigan memorializes his contribution to American hymnody.
